What do nuns eat? Sausages apparently.
Put a date in your diary when you can remove all distractions and give this movie your full attention - it is ATMOSPHERIC, folks!
If you can fix it so the weather is blowing a gale and you feel a bit out of sorts, even better…
Tell everyone you are out and close all the curtains!
Deborah Kerr is the star, playing Sister Clodagh
but it’s Kathleen Byron who really steals the movie. Once you have made the acquaintance of Sister Ruth, it’s unlikely you’ll ever forget her.
I also love Mr Dean, riding around on a little miniature pony with feathers in his hat and smoking his pipe.
Ever had unrequited love for someone like this?
Deborah’s recipe for burgers is very good, it’s the caraway seeds that make it special. I made half the recipe and put in one pinch of caraway seeds. If you like the taste of caraway, I reckon you could double that.
Deborah’s second husband was writer Peter Viertel, I think it is safe to assume that this was how he liked his burgers!
Here’s how mine turned out.
Naturally, I was listening to Nun More Black by the excellent all-girl supergroup Ye Nuns as I made my burger!
I have something very special for you all this month. The lovely Liz Locke from the brilliant Cinema Sips website has created a special cocktail for us inspired by this scene in the film…
This is what you will need for Liz’s cocktail
Empress Gin or any gin plus Butterfly Pea Powder
Elderflower tonic
Lime wheels
I’ll send you a link to Liz’s blog post later this week so you can try her creation.
For sub-paying club members of the Silver Screen Suppers Club, on Friday I’ll be sending out a recipe from the kitchen of Jean Simmons who plays Kanchi.
For this, you will need
Cottage cheese
Mayonnaise
Lettuce
Chicory
Cress (if you can get hold of it!)
Finely chopped nuts
Grapefruit
Oranges
I’ll also be sharing a recipe enjoyed by Sabu who plays The Young General.
and an extra Deborah Kerr recipe - bumper crop!

Keep your eye on your inbox on Sunday 5th of December, when our next movie will be announced. I hope this is the style in which you’ll be watching it.
Christmas is coming! Have you started buying presents yet? Perhaps you know someone who might like one of these?
Books available worldwide via Amazon, all except Cooking With Joan Crawford can also be ordered via your local bookshop. Here’s a link to my UK author page
switch to your own country for the correct prices if you are elsewhere.
Do you like it, Sister Ruth? It’s called Black Narcissus. Comes from the Army and Navy stores in London.
A wonderful, atmospheric post, and the recipes sound delicious. I want to try those burgers very soon.
