The second in an irregular series featuring snacky-things designed to nibble on if you fancy watching something a little edgy. In collaboration with Emiliano Chef - a cookery teacher and writer, who is currently working on a book called A Roman in Britain.
Movie and Snacks!
Whatever Happened to Baby Jane is a stone-cold classic. If you’ve never seen it, do treat yourself to a rollercoaster ride featuring two of the biggest names of the silver screen.
It has one of the weirdest earworms you’ll ever hear…
and one of the most alarming food scenes you will ever see…
Have I tempted you in yet? The film is available to stream on The Internet Archive
Joan Crawford was definitely a whizz in the kitchen. She shared many of her favourite recipes with newspapers, magazines and cookbook compilers. I’ve collected over 30 of them in my Cooking With Joan Crawford book.
There are several snacky things in the book, but I’m going to share two of my favourites, cheese straws and Danti-Chips. Both are super easy to make and delicious.
If you can’t get Bisquick where you are (it’s not widely available in the UK) it’s simple to rustle some up. I use this recipe - it’s just flour, baking powder, salt and butter.
Joan Crawford’s Bisquick Cheese Straws
Bisquick
4 tbsp butter
6 tbsp grated American cheese/cheddar cheese
Paprika and salt to taste
Heat oven to 450℉/230℃/gas mark 8
Make ½ Bisquick recipe.* Roll the dough into a rectangle. Spread with butter and cheese. Roll up like a jelly roll, fold ends to the centre, and roll out again ¼ inch thick. Cut into narrow strips 5 inches long. Twist. Place on baking sheet. Sprinkle with salt and paprika. Bake for 8 minutes.
Some cooking notes from me…
* I use 2 ½ cups / 380g Bisquick and ⅔ cup milk to make the dough. I use about 1 cup of cheese
Grease the baking tray. This amount makes about 30 fat straws - leave room for them to expand.
They freeze really well. It’s really good to have a batch at your icy fingertips for movie snacking! You can heat them up in the microwave or oven.
Joan Crawford’s Danti-Chips
Here’s a little video demo of a snack, which it seems, Joan herself invented!
Plus, if you fancy a cocktail that also may have been invented by La Crawford herself, you’ll find a video demo in this post.
Bottoms up!

Made Joanie’s cheese-straws this morning. Delish! Thanks for sharing the recipe. Plus I made my own version of Bisquick. Greetings from your Supper with the Stars co-author: https://www.instagram.com/supperwiththestars?igsh=MWM3YWxzYzl2bHhwag%3D%3D&utm_source=qr
