My goodness, wasn’t life simpler when you just got letters and postcards?!
I got some great feedback from Silver Screen Suppers Club member Waldorf T. Flywheel about Jane’s Russell’s chilli.
He wrote:
Well I made jane’s chili today and simple as it is, it’s very nice . Meaty for sure and with the tin of tomato soup is, to me, slightly reminiscent of some store bought tinned chilis I’ve bought in the past, but none the worse for it. It’s nice and thick and I had to simmer it for a bit longer to allow the the chili powder more time to blend, but nothing really wrong with it. Could happily eat that in a taco or on a jacket spud with cheese. Next to Diana Dors the quickest and easiest chili I’ve ever made. This Gentleman is never going to prefer it to Chasen’s, but it’s a great time saver option to have. Thanks Jane !
I’m sure I can stand in for Jane here and say, “You’re most welcome Mr Flywheel.” Here’s a pic of Waldorf’s chilli on the go.
Phor! He also made the Bette Davis Red Flannel Hash
and made me very hungry indeed by telling me that he likes corned beef and raw beetroot in a sandwich. Now there’s an idea.
I also got a brilliant message from another reader Lisa Mary (author of the fabulous Reality Rehab), who actually met Jane Russell in person…

‘Gentlemen Prefer Blondes' is in my all-time top five movies and novels. So many great lines - Anita Loos was a comic genius, no question! The book's been a favourite holiday read for years (very tatty and drenched in suntan oil/G&T now - must buy another). I never tire of it.
And now I must show off, for I'm insanely proud to say I met the late, great Jane Russell not once but twice, as a TV guest booker. And she was every bit as magnificent as you'd hope. She made Dorothy Shaw look shy and retiring!
Jane's chilli recipe sounds great. Who knew canned tomato soup would feature, but it actually makes sense. Jane would not sell you a duff recipe! Her husband of 24 years, American football hero Bob Waterfield, said she didn't cook too often for fear of "scorching an asset" (great phrase!). Her chilli's like the lady herself - no fuss and delicious! I think you've created the perfect 'Dinner & a Movie' combo here Jenny!
I'll sign out with some Anita Loos magic, a Dorothy Shaw, Lorelei Lee tiara quote:
Lorelei: How do you put it around your neck?
Dorothy: You don't lovey - it goes on your head.
Lorelei: You must think I was born yesterday!
Dorothy: Well sometimes there's just no other possible explanation.
I hope you’ll treat yourself to Gentlemen Prefer Blondes if you haven’t already.
