In May, on Dinner and a Movie, there are PRIZES to be had. Oh yes! Read on for a chance to win a Wee Wicker Man Candle,
a Wee Hand of Glory,
and more! Read on for details.
Have you ever been somewhere with strange customs and traditions?
Where you walk into a pub,
and all the locals go silent?
Where people are a bit DIFFERENT?
I have moved to a place where the Jack in the Green festival happens over May Day weekend, so it does feel a bit like Summerisle here sometimes…
This announcement edition of the Dinner and a Movie newsletter is going out a little earlier than usual so that you can plan a screening to celebrate Beltane on the first of May if you wish. Sumer is icumen in my friends!
WARNING
There is nudity and paganism in this film. No blood and guts horror - it’s lovely creepy folk horror instead. It’s definitely not for kids.
Edward Woodward’s Signature Dish
Here’s how mine turned out - super delicious. Do bear in mind that this is a British recipe. An Imperial pint is 568 ml, an American pint is 773 ml. If your oven temperature measures in Celsius, 350 degrees is 175 degrees.
This makes for an excellent side dish, but I usually just have a huge slice with a salad. I am also partial to a bit for breakfast with a fried egg on the side…
Broad beans would be good with this, as the Edward Woodward character has turquoise ones with his lamb chop.
Half a pint of ale would be appropriate too.
Peaches and cream for dessert?! Tinned of course…
Prizes
There will be a prize draw for goodies. The Wee Wicker Man and Wee Hand of Glory will be sent to winners wherever they are in the world. The Summerisle Novelty Waxes are just for folk in the UK. British postmen don’t bat an eyelid whatever they have to deliver, but I’m not sure what overseas customs officers would make of a wax rendition of a jar of foreskins being sent through the post…
To be in with a chance to win, either
1 - send me a photo of your version of Edward’s bake
2 - send me a photo of something - anything - in the spirit of Summerisle. Strange sweeties maybe?
3 - send me a photo of yourself or a human you know dressed as if a resident of Summerisle. Here’s one of me to kick it off (at my chum Jim’s wedding in the deepest depths of Essex).
The closing date for a chance to win is 2nd June - send me your pix by replying to any Dinner and a Movie emails - names will go into a hat. If you are viewing this on the web and don’t yet get emails, sign up below to get my newsletters delivered directly to your inbox.

Watch Party Checklist
1 - Get your diary/calendar out and make a date with yourself.
2 - Decide if you will watch the movie solo or with others.
3 - If it’s the latter, here’s an invite you can email to your chosen ones, letting them know the time and date of your screening.
It’s your call what a “watch party” actually is. Just watching the film by yourself with some salty snacks is totally acceptable, but why not dress up, even if you are on your lonesome?
4 - Source the film on DVD or via a streaming service so you’ll have it to hand when the appointed time comes. Some streaming services offer watch party features, so you can even share the experience with friends or family who are miles away, discussing the good bits in a chat box. You could do this via a WhatsApp group or something similar too. The possibilities are endless!
Happy Beltane everyone!

“Suit yourself. I expect you'll be going back today. You wouldn't want to be around here on May Day. Not the way you feel.”
Literally watched Wicker Man for the 1st time very recently!! I think the movie Midsommer must have gotten some ideas from it!
Happy Beltane Jenny! Love the Green Man festival, adore the Wicker Man and I have to get hold of those candles. This might actually be the one watch party I make...
