The Silver Screen Suppers Club
Getting hold of films, optimum viewing conditions and how to join the conversation
Joining the Silver Screen Suppers Club
Welcome to Dinner and a Movie! Subscribers to this newsletter will receive an announcement of which film we will focus on each month, plus a recipe from the kitchen of one of its stars. This will drop into your inbox on the first Sunday of the month.
If you choose to pay a club membership fee by becoming a paid subscriber, you’ll receive extra goodies on the following Friday. This will usually be a video demonstration of a movie-appropriate cocktail or canapé. So come and have a snoop around my kitchen…
In addition, those who choose the megastar option will be assigned a movie star moniker that is theirs for life! All will be genuine film star character names such as Moonbeam McSwine, Kittens Westcourt, Pepper Whipple and Sugarpuss O’Shea.
Obtaining Movies
I’m choosing classic films that are easy to obtain on DVD or via streaming services. If you don’t already have them at your fingertips, you should be able to track them down via Google or other search engines. Charity shops are often a good source of DVD copies too.
Optimimum Viewing Conditions
When organising your special screening, I advise the following indulgences for a mindful experience.
1 - Surround yourself with comfort - pillows plumped, gas fire on, curtains drawn.
2 - Have plenty of chocolate, salty snacks and refreshing beverages within arm’s reach.
3 - Phones on silent, laptops in another room, KEEP OUT sign on the door, whatever you need to give full focus to the film.
4 - If you’ve never seen it before, I advise you to pretend it’s an important live sports event and not read about the plot beforehand. Surprise yourself!
Cooking the Dish
I suggest cooking the dish and enjoying it before or after a film screening for maximum pleasure. But life is busy, I know. So here are a few ideas if you are time-poor or prefer not to cook.
1 - ask someone else to cook the dish for you - especially if they have a bigger TV than you.
2 - get yourself something special for dinner. I hereby allow you to treat yourself. It’s all part of the self-indulgent movie-watching experience.
3 - if you just have salty snacks, popcorn or chocolate treats to accompany the movie, that’s fine too, but please let me know what you had because I AM NOSEY.
Joining the Post Screening Chit Chats
We’ll discuss the movie, the stars, our favourite lines of dialogue, the outfits, and how much we loved it all on the Substack app. I’ll kick off the conversation in the middle of each month. So mix yourself a cocktail and join us once you’ve seen the film - there may be spoilers.
All subscribers will see new topics of conversation whenever I post them, and you can put in your tuppence worth whenever you feel like it, wherever you are in the world.
Our first movie and star-spangled supper dish will be announced on Sunday, 2nd April 2023. I’m so looking forward to sharing recipes from my collection and hearing how they turned out for you if you rustle them up. Bon appétit!
Aw, thanks lovely! It's going to be loads of fun xx
Well, this is genius. I'm a Brit in the US, a foodie, and met Bob Hope once (no kidding, even though I flatter myself I'm too young to know who he was...) Looking forward to this grub/movie mashup, to which I was alerted by the lovely Jolene of Time Travel Kitchen.
